Zombie Robots Invade Volcano
We took a break from posting Craig Ferguson-related news over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, which gave us a chance to do some behind-the-scenes tinkering with the website. Our minions need to do some housekeeping from time to time to keep everything running smoothly. But while all that was going on, we had an unpleasant surprise when our website was attacked by thousands of what are called “zombie robots,” essentially computers that have been hijacked to overwhelm a website’s server. They did a pretty good job, taking us completely offline for several hours, off and on through the weekend. We apologize for any inconvenience if you were attempting to visit the site during those times. We like robot skeletons but not zombie robots.
As a result, we have added some more security features to the site. Some of you may have already experienced bumping into our firewall, called WordFence. It’s set up in such a way that if too many page requests come too quickly, it temporarily keeps that computer out for a while. The reason we use it is to fight off the zombie robots, but occasionally humans accidentally get locked out. If you do, please let us know and we can whitelist your IP address. We’ve also upgraded our servers to be spread to multiple locations around North America. The result should be more reliable service for you, closer to where you live.
Finally, we have added a new daily email service to replace the previous one which was discontinued by the vendor. We have transferred everyone’s email address over to the new system, so it should work correctly. If you have been on the mailing list and don’t receive an email each day starting this week, please let us know and we’ll make sure you’re on the list. If you once unsubscribed and are getting emails again, please use the unsubscribe button at the bottom and they will stop. And if you haven’t signed up, feel free to do so, using the box in the right-hand column.
Thank you as always for being loyal readers as we work our way through some growing pains. We are grateful that so many people enjoy what we do and we are always glad when you contribute a Craig-related story, photo or link that we can share.
