New Orleans is known as a city made for good times and celebrations but it was also set the stage for one of the definitive military victories of American history. When the young nation’s former colonial rulers made an attempt to regain control in the War of 1812, the Americans were able to turn back British forces, marking a turning point in the conflict. Country singer Johnny Horton popularized a musical account of the battle in 1959.
