Meeting Josh in Person
Timm and JoshEarlier this month, the RSA’s @timmccoy went to see Craig Ferguson and Josh Robert Thompson on stage near Minneapolis. He had a chance to snap a photo with Josh and tweeted it. Since Timm had interviewed Josh for a podcast not long ago, we wanted to know more about the story behind the photo. He sent us this:

WCSB_logoBeing one of the influences in Josh’s life when he was a teenager, it was a shock to me when a little over a year ago Josh contacted me through Facebook asking if I was “The Turkey Guy,” a character voice I did on radio station WCSB out of Cleveland, Ohio on a show called “Brainrot Radio Theater.” Yes it was. He’s been a fan of mine for the past 23 years now.

The ZoneAlthough I knew Josh for all this time, we never actually met face to face. He did an interview with me and my wife Joan on our podcast “The Zone with Timm McCoy“, but that also was the first time we spoke to each other since 1991. October 11 was the first show on the current “Hot and Grumpy” comedy tour and it took place at the Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake, Minnesota just 30 minutes south of where we live in Minneapolis. The show, by the way, was way beyond funny. Josh opened the evening with uncanny impressions of Morgan Freeman, Robert DeNiro and his very own beloved semi-religious character, “Apostle BG.” Then came the main show with Craig that brought down the house.

Afterward, Joan and I were setting in the Fireside Lounge of the bar, when in walks right in front of us, Josh Robert Thompson. I shouted lightly for him to come over. Upon our eyes meeting, it took him two ticks to realize who I was. His face brightened up like sunshine. We hugged, his security guard said if he was going to be needed, Josh said, “They’re OK!” Due to Craig needing to be on the road for their next gig in Iowa, our time was short. We chatted about the past, took some pics and video. The picture was a very good Bobby DeNiro saying “I’m gonna break your legs.” After 23 years of being dear friends and admiring each other’s work, finally getting to meet such a wonderful man and his incredible spirit is worth more than anything in the world to me. We are, in fact, dear brothers.

Thanks for sending us your story, Timm! Have you seen Craig on stage this month? Or do you have tickets to see him in November? We want to hear your story. Please send it to us using our Contact Us form, or send us a link to your blog. We’d be happy to share it with the rest of the robot skeleton army.

One of the better photos of Craig on stage we’ve seen in the past week came from Edmonton, where @karimayer snapped a shot from the fifth row during the October 22nd show. Nice picture, Kari!

Dreams and Psychoanalysis
Even though Craig has only recently been counseling guests while smoking his pipe, he has been talking about psychoanalysis on the show for years. In this monologue from 2005, he delves into the topic.

Craig to Host Game ShowCelebrity Name Game sl
Craig Ferguson will host a new game show called Celebrity Name Game, due to reach television screens in the fall of 2014. As we first reported here last year, Craig taped a pair of pilot episodes of the show, to give the producers some examples to show prospective supporters. After the show was shopped around to the networks, game show distributors FremantleMedia and Debmar-Mercury (the same groups that distributes Family Feud in syndication and shows like The Price Is Right and Let’s Make A Deal on CBS) announced Monday they will distribute the show in syndication next fall. The announcement did not mention if any television station groups have signed up so far, but as we hear about them, we’ll let you know. Since the show will be syndicated, you’ll need to check the local listings “in your region” for times and channels.

Identity CrisisThe format of the show is is based on board game Identity Crisis, where contestants team up with celebrities to guess a famous person’s identity (real or fictional) based on a series of clues. The show is produced by Coquette Productions, owned by Courtney Cox and David Arquette. The story was reported widely on Monday in publications like Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Broadcasting & Cable, Newsday and the Los Angeles Times.

As a punk rock fan, Craig and many of the bands he listened to were undoubtedly influenced by singer/songwriter Lou Reed, who passed away over the weekend.

Keep Those Votes Coming
02 Craig Ferguson (63)There are lots of polls and things to vote for on the interwebs, including several “favorite” polls for late-night talk shows and hosts. In recent years, relative newcomers like Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and the Jimmys (Fallon and Kimmel) have outpolled veterans like Jay Leno and David Letterman, thanks to fans who rally to cast their votes. This fall, we’re hoping Craig Ferguson can come out on top in a pair of votes: AdWeek’s Hot List and the People’s Choice Awards. At this moment, Craig leads the AdWeek poll by about 10 percent, so every vote counts to keep him ahead of Colbert before the deadline of November 25th. Thanks to the RSA’s Daun for the reminder! And for the People’s Choice, don’t forget there are two rounds of voting. Craig has been listed as a candidate for the third time in the Late Night Host category. You can vote for him in the preliminary round from now until October 31st. If he is named one of the five finalists, the second round of votes will be cast from mid-November to mid-December. We’ll keep you posted.

Ring Bell for ServiceRing Bell
The RSA’s @HoboRobot remembers the Porky Pig and Sylvester the Cat classic short Claws for Alarm, where the hapless pair spend the night in a haunted hotel. They ring the bell several times at the front desk for service, perhaps hoping “Jerry” will answer!

Youthful Indiscretions
In this monologue from 2006, Craig recalls getting in trouble as a kid.
