Opening Segment Changes
It’s been five days since Craig & Company returned to CBS Television City from a fortnight’s hiatus.  And it’s been five days since things changed in the Late Late Show’s opening segment.  Monday’s lack of monologue appears to have been a one-time thing but the “split” use of the theme song may be a longer-term switch.  As it turns out, there is a bit of a backstory.

Getting Viewers To Stick Around
From the earliest days of Craig’s run on the Late Late Show, the opening segment has been an odd thing.  Most late night shows (and many other television shows) tend to start with the opening theme and a fairly long first segment.  The first segment typically runs ten to twelve minutes in length, with the idea being to “hook” the audience… that is, to pique their interest and retain them for as long as possible.  Many prime time shows have gone so far as to run an opening segment for several minutes before a tiny five to ten-second theme song or even none at all, with the hope of getting viewers too interested in the story to leave.

Ads Before Midnight
But because Craig is on so late (12:37am on the East and West coasts where the bulk of viewers live), advertisers wanted to be sure at least the first commercial break tied to the show would be seen before people went to bed.  The idea was to give some sort of quick tease after David Letterman’s show ended, take a long commercial break for network and local ads and then start the show for real… at about 12:43am.  There was discussion back and forth between the network and the show’s producers and the result, which could have been a negative, was turned into a positive.  Craig and the LLS team came up with what have become trademark opening bits; sometimes a musical number, sometimes a foreshadowing of upcoming guests, an exploration of topics by Craig or a puppet, and sometimes a rambling but charming admission that he has no material for the night.

The Theme Song Moves
Fast-forward to this past week when viewers saw something new:  Craig did his opening bit but then the full theme song played, followed by pictures of the night’s on the screen:

After the long commercial break for network and local ads, the show comes back with a reprise of the theme’s final phrase “Tomorrow’s just your future yesterday!” and the familiar words of announcer Shadoe Stevens, “Ladies and gentlemen, Craig Ferguson!”  From there, the show proceeds as it has been, with Craig entering the studio to the cheers of candy-bribed hobos, teasingly smacking the camera and welcoming the studio and home audiences:

Our Educated Guess
While it is speculation on our part, the reason behind the change may come down to the original goal of having long opening segments:  Retaining audience.  Whether prodded by research or the producer’s gut feeling, we think it makes sense for three reasons:

  1. Rather than Craig simply saying, “We’ll be back after this,” the show can use more of the shiny things in its toolbox (the catchy, energetic theme song and the promise of interesting guests) to encourage people to stick around after the commercials.
  2. By placing the theme song earlier, the show’s “second start” with Craig’s monologue begins closer to 12:45am. That’s important to the people who track the show’s ratings because 12:45-12:50am is one of the five-minute blocks checked by electronic meters during the show. It’s a technical detail, but perhaps an important one.
  3. And finally, the theme at the end of the opening segment allows a prime location for the announcer to say, “The Late Late Show, brought to you by…” We could see a “title” sponsor or two emerge in the coming months.

The Late Late Show and its more traditionally-formatted competitors are in an ongoing effort to draw more viewers.  Perhaps this small change of format, which still manages to keep advertisers happy with their early commercial break, might help the show keep people awake just a little bit longer.  That’s our best guess as to why the changes happened.  What do you think about the way the show begins now?  Let us know in the comment section below. Thanks to the RSA’s General @Malinky2Stoatir for the video clips of Thursday’s show.

Enjoying the Show
Thursday night’s guests each tweeted after their appearances.  Henry Winkler said:

good morning!!! first of all thank you all for your supportive tweets about the CRAIG FERGUSON show ..what a great way to start this day

And astronaut Mike Massimino said:

Taping the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson was a blast! Hope you enjoy it!

Massimino’s appearance make the RSA’s @doxieone1 wonder what Geoff Petersen would look like as a astronaut/cosmonaut/robonaut.  Friday evening, Geoff tweeted:

Tonight, my hilarious dead-on wonderfully accurate impression of @CraigyFerg. And now I’m unemployed. #willsayballsforfood

Tonight’s Guests
Friday on the Late Late Show, Craig’s guests are actor/comedian Cedric the Entertainer and actress Moon Bloodgood.

Craig To Appear on Nerdist TV Show
Earlier this week, the @Nerdist Chris Hardwick taped a pilot episode of a new panel talk show for BBC America, based on his popular podcasts.  Among the guests for his first-ever show was the one and only Craig Ferguson.  We have not seen a specific date when the show will air but we’ll keep an eye out for it and let you know.  Until then, there are some behind-the-scenes photos from the show including a couple with Craig.

The Scots on Brave
The UK’s Daily Record talks about the making of the Disney/Pixar animated film Brave and how its makers strove to weave Scotland’s Highlands seamlessly into the story.  The Scotsman.com has a story about the film’s composer.  Craig voices the character of Lord Macintosh in the film, due out in July of 2012.

Coverage of Craig and Neil
The websites ComicsAllicance.com and SFX.co.uk caught Craig’s interview with author Neil Gaiman.  Even Craig’s occasional guest Phil Plait (@badastronomer) chimed in:

Nice job on @CraigyFerg’s show, @NeilHimself! But Craig, I need to lecture you about the Coriolis force for an hour or two though.

Shades of Oz
Geoff Petersen tweeted on Thursday:

Pay no attention to that @joshrthompson behind the curtain. I am my own robot. Okay, gay robot. Okay, gay robot skeleton.

Is that a beaded curtain, Geoff?  Meanwhile, Craig has surpassed three quarters of a million followers on Twitter.  That means he is among the top six hundred users on Twitter in terms of followers and the RSA continues to grow by the day!

Tonight’s Guests
Thursday on the Late Late Show, popular guest Henry Winkler returns, along with astronaut Mike Massimino, who tweeted:

Update: Live Geoff Every Night
The voice of Geoff Petersen, Josh Robert Thompson tweeted on Wednesday evening:

As of today, I am officially performing/voicing @GeofftheRobot live EVERY NIGHT on @CraigyFerg! You’re welcome, gay robot fanatics. #RSA

Congratulations, Josh on a well-deserved reward for your hard work and your ability to keep Craig laughing.

Ferguson on Leno
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno website shows Craig Ferguson as a guest on Wednesday, July 13th.  Thanks to the RSA’s Yo for sending us the link on NBC’s Tonight Show website.  The unusual situation of one late night host appearing on another’s show on a competing network is not unheard of… Craig appeared on Conan O’Brien‘s TBS late night show recently.  The appearance is likely (as the RSA’s Bruce Bromley suggested) a chance to promote Disney’s Winnie The Pooh, which opens in wide release in the US and Canada two days later on Friday the 15th.  Craig is one of the most recognizable celebrity voices in the animated feature film, along with John Cleese… and because Craig is based in Los Angeles, The Tonight Show an convenient stop for Disney’s promotion team to place one of the film’s billable stars.  The last time a competitor appeared on the Tonight Show, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel pointedly mocked host Jay Leno in the wake of NBC’s late night debacle that moved Leno to a prime time show, moved up O’Brien an hour to 11:35pm and subsequently dumped O’Brien to bring Leno back to his old time slot.  Time has passed since then.  Will there be any fireworks or will the talk be contained mostly to Craig’s role as Owl in the film?  We’ll find out on July 13th.

Dressing Paris
Craig’s banter with Paris Hilton over her shoulder-padded, 1960’s-evoking Judy Jetson or “air hostess” dress got some attention from New York Magazine, Monsters & Critics, FadedYouthBlog.com and HeatWorld.com.

Gaiman on Doctor Who
BBC America took note of Neil Gaiman‘s appearance on the Late Late Show, in which the novelist (not to mention writer of the fourth episode of the current series of Doctor Who) got to talk about his experience with the popular program.

@BBCAMERICA Last night on The Late Late Show, @CraigyFerg & @Neilhimself talked #DoctorWho http://t.co/wTeUEwl

Craig enjoyed Gaiman’s appearance and his scent, apparently:

Despite @neilhimself wearing a black t shirt which was in flagrant disregard of my wishes, he was delightful. He smells like cherries.

Gaiman tweeted that he had a good time:

Was so nervous before @CraigyFerg taping. Then sat down at the desk & he was so welcoming & funny I forgot about everything except chatting.

No Monologue Tuesday
You weren’t hallucinating… there was no monologue on Tuesday’s show.  We’re not sure of the reason.  Perhaps Craig just felt like zigging while others were zagging.  Or maybe because he missed the emails on Monday, he wanted to take ten minutes for email on Tuesday.  He might have wanted more time with Neil Gaiman.  Or as the RSA’s General @Malinky2Stoatir tweeted, the reason may have been more simple:

Craig mentioned during tonight’s cold open, that he had a lack of material…I guess it wasn’t a joke. 🙁 #MissingMinologueAndThemeSong

That may be it. Those who watched Monday’s monologue noticed that it contained more “late night jokes” than usual, too.  We’ll be watching Wednesday to see if Craig gets back to his usual routine.  Although, he may have done a monologue and pulled a Jedi mind trick to make us forget, as the RSA’s @bgrhubarb speculates:

Perhaps the monologue was all about mind control, and we’ve just been programmed to forget it. #MissingMonologue

Is Beaded Curtain a Thing?
If it wasn’t, it is now.  Craig and Geoff’s conversation about beaded curtains got the RSA’s @doxieone1 inspired to come up with a fun poster.

Pitts Endorses UFO Book
Astronomer Derrick Pitts, an occasional guest on the Late Late Show has endorsed a book about UFO’s, saying scientists should be able to examine the issue “…without all the stigma involved.”  The website OpenMinds.net details the books and its upcoming paperback release.

Tonight’s Guests
Wednesday on the Late Late Show, Craig welcomes actress Mary Louise Parker and comedian Dom Irrera.  CBS tweeted:

Mary-Louise Parker explains the source of her hickey and laughs from Dom Irrera on #LateLateShow with @CraigyFerg at 12:37am on #CBS 2nite!

Thursday, watch for actor Henry Winkler and astronaut Mike Massimino.

Craig And Arthur
Monday night on the Late Late Show, Craig Ferguson talked about his experiences in Paris, where he taped five shows to be aired the first week of August.  He also recorded at least one show with his French doppelgänger, Jacques “Arthur” Essbag and showed a promo of what will be seen in France when Arthur’s show returns in September.  Entertainment Weekly reported on the promo.

Melissa and Talking Cats
New York Magazine didn’t miss Craig’s magical conversation with Melissa Joan Hart on Monday night.

Neil’s Wild Day
Author Neil Gaiman woke up to a jolt this morning, with a message that his flight to Los Angeles had been canceled.  He was due not only to appear as a guest on the Late Late Show Tuesday but at a book signing in LA after his television appearance.  After some scrambling, he was able to catch a different flight.  Once at CBS Television City, he sent out a tweet asking for advice:

Quick Twitter poll. In dressing room at @CraigyFerg. Should I wear a black t shirt, or go crazymadwild and wear a grey one?

Among those who responded was Craig himself, who pleaded:

@neilhimself For God’s sake grey. The lighting cant handle a black shirt.

Neil replied:

@CraigyFerg I’m going for black. I’m sorry.  // I picked black. I know. Sorry. Have now been made up. Signed a copy of good omens for somebody’s husband.

And in the meantime, the @Nerdist Chris Hardwick tweeted:

So @neilhimself is on @CraigyFerg tonight, then @CraigyFerg is doing my @BBCAMERICA show & we podcast @neilhimself tomorrow! #CircleBrag

What a group… it’s a geek/nerd/awesome confluence!

Tonight’s Guests
Tuesday on the Late Late Show, Craig’s guests are socialite Paris Hilton and author Neil Gaiman.  For some reason, actor and social media pacesetter Wil Wheaton was backstage at the Late Late Show on Tuesday.  We aren’t sure why.  But he sent a tweet:

You’re really going to want to watch @neilhimself on the @CraigyFergshow tonight. I’m watching them from backstage, and it’s awesome.

Wednesday, Craig welcomes actress Mary Louise Parker and comedian Dom Irrera.

Craig is Back in Town

After two weeks of the re-run fairy, robot skeletons around the hollowed out volcano are itching for new episodes of the Late Late Show and Monday night, they get their wish!  We’ll be seeing new episodes for at least the next six weeks, including a full week of episodes from Paris, August 1st-5th.

Brave Trailer

In case you missed it in theaters before Cars 2 this weekend, Disney/Pixar has released the first trailer for the animated feature film Brave, coming to theaters June 22nd, 2012. Craig Ferguson is not the voice of the narrator of this trailer; it is Scottish actor Kevin McKidd. However, Craig will be the voice of a major character, Lord Macintosh. This is expected to be the first of several trailers for the film and is primarily used to set the mood. The only character featured is the film’s lead, Princess Merida… the first female lead character in a Pixar film. Take a look:

Winnie The Pooh US Premiere

Meanwhile, the next major film featuring Craig hits theaters July 15th. There was a special US premiere screening of Winnie The Pooh in New York City last Saturday. Craig was not able to attend but a number of key people involved in the film and its music were there. BroadwayWorld.com covered the event.

Haggis Flavor, Please

Craig’s assistant, Rebecca Tucker found some an interesting meal:

Can you guess where I am? http://twitpic.com/5hqzet // My half eaten plate of haggis (it was seriously delicious and I ate it all) http://twitpic.com/5htcpy

Do We Have a Picture of Paul McCartney?

The ever-watchful Joe from IAmATVJunkie.com spotted a fun post on Slate.com.  Apparently Craig is not alone.

Tonight’s Guests

New episodes return to the Late Late Show on Monday with comedian Dennis Miller and actress Melissa Joan Hart. Hart tweeted:

At CBS ready to play with @CraigyFerg tonight  http://lockerz.com/s/114824989

On Tuesday, Craig’s guests will be socialite Paris Hilton and author Neil Gaiman.

Back From France
After a busy week in Paris and a week off to recover, Craig Ferguson and the Late Late Show team are back in the saddle Monday night.  There are five weeks of brand-new episodes of the LLS on tap before we get to see the shows that were taped on location in France.  No doubt they will be edited together in the coming weeks and the excitement level is already high.  The hollowed out volcano was also buzzing on Friday night after Jacques “Arthur” Essbag tweeted a promotional video for his show, featuring Craig in many scenes.  If you missed the video, check out here.  That episode won’t air until sometime in September but we know that there are several Euroskellies on the lookout.  In the meantime, the RSA’s @Colleen_Byrne captured some fun still pictures from the promo video.

Craig sent a tweet and a photo from high above the desert on Sunday night:

http://yfrog.com/kkjdybj Mojave sky. Almost home. Paris may be chic but LA is the hot smoggy tramp that I can’t stay away from.
