Michael Clarke Duncan Dies
Oscar-nominated actor and friend of the Late Late Show Michael Clarke Duncan has died at the age of 54. Huge in both physical size and stage presence, Duncan wowed critics and audiences alike with his portrayal of John Coffey in film adaptation of Stephen King‘s The Green Mile. From that iconic role, which earned him the best supporting actor Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe nomination, he went on to perform in several memorable films and television shows, including the Fox TV drama The Finder. Earlier this year, Duncan traveled with Craig Ferguson as part of a special week of shows in Scotland. Several weeks ago, Duncan suffered a heart attack and had remained since then in the hospital. He leaves his mother, a sister and his fiancée, Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth, best known from TV’s The Apprentice.

Among those reporting the news late Monday were TV Guide and the Los Angeles Times.  The Glasgow-based band The Imagineers posted on their Facebook wall:

[stextbox id=”custom”]We’re gutted to hear about the death of Michael Clarke Duncan.

It felt like Christmas morning when we learned we would get the chance to work with him.

Tonight’s Guests
Monday’s episode of the Late Late Show is an encore presentation of last Tuesday’s episode with TV/radio host Larry King and comedienne Michelle Buteau.  All-new episodes resume Tuesday, with Craig’s guest, comedienne Kathy Griffin.

Tickets Selling Quickly
Tickets to see Craig Ferguson performing live stand up comedy this fall are selling quickly. Book early to avoid disappointment! It appears that the main room is sold out for Craig’s interview appearance at the Paley Center for Media in New York on October 4th, but tickets are still available for a room at the Center with closed-circuit monitors where you can see the interview while it’s happening. In Greensburg, Pennsylvania, no seats are left on the main floor but there are still tickets available in the balcony. For dates, times, locations and ticket links for all of Craig’s live appearances, check out our Live Comedy Tour page.

People Digs Kristen
People Magazine noticed Kristen Bell‘s appearance on the Late Late Show last week, including her dress in its “Style Watch” section.

Rove Gets Bumped

Australia’s Sydney Morning Herald has a brief story about Craig’s move to Studio 56 at CBS Television City, noting that it displaces Aussie talk show host Rove McManus, who will move his LA-based show to a different studio at Warner Brothers in Burbank.

Adelaide Digs Craig
The RSA’s Chris spotted an article mentioning Craig in the newspaper in Adelaide, Australia.

Reno/Miami’s Finest
After the Super Bowl a few years ago, Craig interviewed Lieutenant Dangle and Officer Junior about the hazards of policing a crowd at the big game:

This Week’s Guests

David Simon

Here’s a look at the week ahead on the Late Late Show.  We’ll get our first visit from the re-run fairy in the new studio on Labor Day, when CBS serves up an encore presentation of the August 28th show, featuring TV/radio host Larry King and comedienne Michelle Buteau.  Then, all-new episodes resume on Tuesday, when comedienne Kathy Griffin returns to the show.  On Wednesday, Craig chats with actor Jeremy Irons and actress Monica Potter.  Actress Angela Kinsey, writer David Simon and the band called The Heavy will be in the studio on Thursday.  And on Friday, Craig welcomes actor Jeff Goldblum and actress Lauren Miller.

Vampire McMonkeys

The RSA’s Ruth was enjoying lunch at McDonald’s with her granddaugter when she saw a happy meal prize of Paul Frank’s Julius the Monkey, with fangs. She said she immediately thought, “Vampire Monkey!” and it made her happy the rest of the afternoon.

Band Too Big
As reported on the website jambands.com, Tedeschi Trucks Band has canceled, or more likely postponed, its appearance on the Late Late Show, because even with the new stage, there still isn’t enough room for the whole band to perform. The article indicates that the show is still looking for a way to accommodate the band in the future.

Sutton Foster Sings
BroadwayWorld.com has a brief article mentioning Sutton Foster‘s appearance on the Late Late Show, where she performed the song “Down With Love.”

Gum Update
The RSA’s Jiffy Cat replied to our most recent post and mentioned where Angry Scotsman Chewing Gum was most recently available:

Hey Jiffy Cat here. I got the gum at Archie Mcphee in Seattle. Here’s the link. (It) doesn’t look like they have it any more but maybe they have it locked away in a cold dark dungeon.

September Birthdays

Yvonne De Carlo

Saturday, September 1st is the birthday of actress Yvonne De Carlo, boxer Rocky Marciano, actress Lily Tomlin and singer Gloria Estefan.  Sunday, September 2nd is the birthday of football analyst Terry Bradshaw, actor Mark Harmon, actor Keanu Reeves and actress Salma Hayek.  Here is Gloria Estefan performing her biggest hit with the band Miami Sound Machine in 1985:

Angry Scotsman Gum
A while back, the RSA’s @hoborobot spotted an image from a Flickr user named Jiffy Cat meant to evoke a drive-in movie theater, and featuring a product you might buy at the theater’s snack shack called “Angry Scotsman Chewing Gum.” It turns out, Angry Scotsman Chewing Gum was a real product, although from what we can tell, it is no longer being made. We found a few images of the packaging but can’t find it for sale. The few sites we located list it as discontinued. If you have seen it or know where fans could order it, please let us know!

Web Therapy
The Huffington Post spotted Lisa Kudrow‘s appearance on the Late Late Show and laughed about Craig’s suggestion for a plot line if he were to guest star on her show, Web Therapy.

Dragons on Cartoon Network
Cartoon Network is about to launch the first of two seasons of Dragons: Riders of Berk, based on the films and book How To Train Your Dragon.  Some of the original movie’s cast will be part of the Cartoon Network version, however, Craig’s part of Gobber will be voiced by Chris Edgerly.  Two episodes were broadcast on August 7th, but the show gets under way in earnest on September 4th.

The Giant Within
Craig addresses Leprechaun-Americans and releases the giant within:

Tonight’s Guests
Friday on the Late Late Show, Craig welcomes actor Seth Green and Broadway actress Sutton Foster. Green tweeted:

Tonight @CraigyFerg & I discuss insomnia, #RCDC & what that horse on stage truly wants. http://say.ly/AxL451R

LLS Producer Michael Naidus tweeted:

Dear Broadway: Can we keep @sfosternyc, please? We like her a lot. Sincerely, Hollywood. #TonightOnFerguson

And Craig added:

2night’s guests @SethGreen & @sfosternyc are gifted & beautiful artists. This helps balance the effect of the killer horse/creepy robot/me

DVR Alert: The start of Thursday’s Late Late Show is delayed “in your region” approximately 21 minutes due to extended coverage of the Republican National Convention. The LLS will begin at approximately 12:58am ET/11:58pm CT. The show may be on even later in Tampa, Florida due to local news extended coverage of the convention, and possibly in the Gulf Coast states due to coverage of Tropical Depression Isaac and the storm’s aftermath.

New Set Inspiration
The RSA’s @hoborobot has also been inspired by the new set, imagining the thoughts going on in Secretariat’s head, what might be hiding behind the red curtain on the right side of the stage, what happens when Secretariat gets no hay, and what Sandra, the rhino made of kittens, is thinking.

Craig Billboard
The RSA’s @normaapril spotted a Craig Ferguson billboard in Atlantic City, promoting his October 5th show at the Tropicana. Thanks, Norma! Meanwhile, New Jersey’s nj.com, a website run by the Star-Ledger and a group of other area newspapers, has a brief article promoting Craig’s upcoming Atlantic City appearance.

Tattoo Origins

Craig talks often about the tattoo on his right arm, featuring a cartoon drawn by Benjamin Franklin in the Pennsylvania Gazette, symbolizing the American colonies and the need to unite against their common enemy. The RSA’s @kstene recently spotted that cartoon in her history textbook.

Desperate Bid

Tonight’s Guests
Thursday on the Late Late Show, Craig’s guests are actress Lisa Kudrow and comedian Marc Maron.  On Friday, Craig welcomes back actor Seth Green and Broadway actress Sutton Foster.

DVR Alert: The Late Late Show is starting about 7 minutes late on Wednesday due to an overrun of coverage of the Republican National Convention on CBS. The show will start at just after 12:44am ET/11:44pm CT Wednesday night and may be late on Thursday night as well. We’ll keep you updated.

Guest Update: Comedian Nick Griffin has been added to Wednesday’s show.

The Nerdist is Fit to Print

The @Nerdist Chris Hardwick was recently profiled in the New York Times. Thanks to the RSA’s Gus for the link to that story, as well as an article in the San Diego Union-Tribune about frequent LLS guest, country singer Toby Keith.

Canberra Tweets
Australia’s ABC Radio reports on a plan to invite Australians to enjoy a free weekend in the capital city of Canberra, on the condition that they use social media to talk about their experiences. What could go wrong?

Skeletons Rising

While we were away, several members of the RSA sent us an article from Discovery.com talking about a skeleton army rising from a bog in Denmark. Perhaps it’s beginning!

Geoff’s Beginnings
Craig’s robot skeleton sidekick Geoff Peterson was designed by the Mythbusters‘ own robotics expert Grant Imahara. Geoff has become pretty sophisticated with wireless controls and the voice talents of Josh Robert Thompson. But in the early days, Geoff’s voice was provided by Craig, with a few stock phrases. Grant demonstrates in this video clip from 2010:

Warp Speed, Mr. Imahara

Speaking of Grant Imahara, he is getting the chance to play the role of Ensign Sulu in a new internet-based re-imagining of the original Star Trek series. The online newspaper rafu.com, which covers Japanese news in the Los Angeles area, explains.

Tonight’s Guests
Wednesday on the Late Late Show, actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan returns to the show, Craig chats with actress Fiona Gubelmann and we’ll see comedian Nick Griffin.  On Thursday, Craig welcomes back actress Lisa Kudrow and a last-minute addition, comedian Marc Maron.

Guest Update

Lauren Miller

The guest list has been updated through September 7th, including a Labor Day rebroadcast of Tuesday’s show with Larry King and Michelle Buteau, plus Angela Kinsey, David Simon, The Heavy, Jeff Goldblum and Lauren Miller. Ben Stein has been added to the list of future guests and Canadian comedian Gerry Dee tweeted that he’ll be on the show sometime soon. See the full and most up-to-date listings on our Guests page.

Reaction To New Set
We’re starting to see the first reactions to the new set for the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. One writer and clearly a fan of the show from TheOuthousers.com “couldn’t be happier,” and TVGuide.com thought that in the opening bit, Regis was being serious (silly TV Guide). Mostly what we’ve heard skellies chatting about is that the new floor helps the lighting, that they will have to get used to seeing guests enter from the right instead of the left and that Craig looked good in his two-piece suit. On Tuesday’s show, a comedian tries out the new stage for the first time and later, we’ll get to see musical guests perform there as well. Embrace change, fellow skellies! On Tuesday, Craig tweeted:

2nd show in new studio tonight. I think I’m finally approaching the vibe I’ve been after for years. Jungian expressionist Heehaw.

Meanwhile, the RSA’s @hoborobot has already captioned one new feature of the set with Geoff Peterson‘s comment.

Nice Guy
In a recent interview with Deadline.com, Jimmy Kimmel is asked about Craig and gives a brief response.

That Naughty Rachel Ray

Craig and Rachel Ray pushed the boundaries a little bit in their most recent interview with some single, double and triple-entendres. The folks at DailyGlow.com didn’t quite get the jokes, but the people at Eater.com sure did. All of them.

New Stage Time Lapse
At the start of Monday’s show, CBS treated us to a time-lapse video of the process of taking down the old Late Late Show set in Studio 58 and setting up the new one in Studio 56. Here is the clip, showing many weeks of work condensed into 40 seconds, plus the opening portion of Monday’s monologue. Our apologies in advance for the embedded commercial:

Video courtesy: CBS

Tonight’s Guests
Tuesday on the Late Late Show, Craig talks with TV/radio host Larry King and we’ll see a performance by comedienne Michelle Buteau.  On Wednesday, watch for actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan and actress Fiona Gubelmann. Larry King tweeted on Tuesday:

@CraigyFerg here I come! Looking forward to seeing you on your show tonight and on my show.next week. Does this mean we’re dating?

The show to which King refers is his new online talk show on ora.tv.  The tweet was later deleted and we have not seen a listing for Craig to appear on King’s show yet but when we do, we’ll pass it along.

Guest Update

Katey Sagal

Added to the upcoming guest list for future shows are Katy Sagal and Mike Massimino. You can see the full list on our Guests page.
